Bake a Cake
Neurometriks, Ltd. would like to introduce to the aging population an animated and
interactive computer software program to help specifically with activities of daily
living: ADLmetriks-Bake-a-Cake©.
It is well known that the risk of dementia increases exponentially with age. With
the surge of baby boomers and increasing life expectancies, this will place an overwhelming
burden on the health care system and society. Several groups have risen to this
need by developing brain stimulating games; both computer based and traditional
paper and pencil methods. They all share one element in common: to stimulate the
brain by evoking responses to various tasks such as recalling items or calculating
figures.
With each trial of our activity, memory will be increased. The task will measure
memory, visuospatial skills, orientation, and language function.
In patients with dementia or mild cognitive complaints, the literature is replete
with studies showing the benefits of cognitive training. For example, one group
showed digital photographs of a shopping route to Alzheimer and control patients.
The task was to find a route and buy three items followed by answering questions.
After a 4 week trial, there were substantial gains with respect to the number of
mistakes on the questions. The effects of training were sustained for three weeks.
We hope this will be a valuable experience.
